DVD Enchanting Shadow
IVL

image

Contrary to what is advertised on the cover, the frame is 4/3, but it's hard to complain, given the stupendous quality of the image for such an old movie. It tends to be brownish at times, but it's good enough to have managed to resurrect it that way.

sound

Difficult to judge the sound which consists of the original crackling soundtrack on which digital sound effects (rain, crickets) were superimposed. Some passages even seem to have been voiced-over by dubbing artists to fill the mute gaps. All this seems very questionable and purists may wish the sound could have been restored in a less exuberant way.

subtitles

A bit too small and sometimes a bit too quick.

special features

Interesting 15' overview of Li Han-Hsiang's career: 'The Savant Li Han-hsiang'.

menus

Animated menu.

quality/price ration

There are very few reasons (the documentary perhaps) why you should prefer the DVD version from the VCD version.
